The storage basket has upgraded insulation that keeps ice solid for a reasonable amount of time after it's made. It's not a freezer, so ice will eventually melt if left for extended periods — but for normal use, grabbing ice throughout the day, it holds up well. If you're not planning to use it for several hours, simply turn the machine off and the insulation will do its job until you're back.
